Bryan K. Ulmer and Sovereign Sparrow

Husband, Father, Pastor

What’s up, guys! As you may already know, my name is Bryan Ulmer. I have a Bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Tech University and am currently pursuing a Master of Divinity at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky as an online student. More importantly, I am a husband, father, and pastor. Allow me to tell you a little bit about myself through the various hats that I wear.

First of all, I am a husband. My primary calling in life is to cultivate and guard. Just as it was for Adam in the garden, so it is for me today. I believe that my wife is the best gift given to me by the Lord behind salvation. As a result of being the most important thing in God’s creation to me, she is the primary benefactor of all of my efforts to cultivate and guard what the Lord has given me. I desire to be known as a man who is passionately devoted to and in love with his wife. Allie and I have been married for five years, and it has been incredible.

Second, I am a father. Allie and I have three awesome kids — Judah (m), Noa (f), and Tripp (m). Each were born a year apart. Yikes! I didn’t see that one coming, but hey, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I was made to be a dad. It is a joy for me to cultivate and guard them as well.

Finally, I am a pastor. To be specific, I serve vocationally as a minister at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church - West Monroe, LA. I oversee the student ministry and the church’s social media content. My main area of focus in ministry is preaching. People are saved by the hearing of the Word and by the transformative power of the Spirit, and that is what most of my time is devoted to — sermon prep, prayer, and study. I also love serving the various needs of the church by means of praying for, visiting with, and investing in our members.

Salvation and the Call to Ministry

In brief, I was saved by God’s grace through much prayer and the hard work of loving, God-fearing parents. I was born again at the age of seven while listening to a sermon that was delivered by my childhood pastor, Dr. David Lindow of First Baptist Church of Universal City, Texas.

As for the call, I aspired to be a minister at an early age. There were members of my family who began praying for me and what I would do with my life when I was a small boy. That aspiration grew within the context of a local church and was met with a calling from the Lord while I was in undergrad. During the summer of 2016 while working at Seeker Springs Ministries as a summer camp staffer, I responded to a sermon delivered by Bro. John Fream at my (then) home church, Cypress Baptist in Benton, Louisiana.

At the end of 2017, I took my first ministry position as the student minister at Cheniere Baptist Church of West Monroe, LA. I am still overwhelmed at how much that congregation molded and shaped me as a minister. They loved my wife and I so well, and I will forever be grateful for Bro. Zach Anderson and Cheniere Baptist.

After serving Cheniere for a little over two years, God moved Allie and I down the road to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church of West Monroe, Louisiana. I have now been serving here for three years, and it has been a bumpy, yet joyful ride. My people know what I mean. I am passionate for all that God is doing at Mt. Vernon, and I am so glad that I get to play a small part in it.

Sovereign Sparrow

Sovereign Sparrow is an online platform for me to share and store my preaching and teaching content. I have a desire to produce Gospel saturated content for the benefit of the church. This content may never reach anyone, but it may just reach the one person God intends to receive it. That is my ultimate prayer for Sovereign Sparrow. That God would be glorified and His sheep will be edified. With that being said, feel free to check out my sermons, articles, blog posts, and podcast. Let me know what you think.
